I have been pricing outboards lately and I have found a few decent deals.

What are your opptions on a “New” 1998 Suzuki 85hp 2-stroke vs. 2003 Mercury 75hp 2-stroke?

The Suzuki includes a prop and new control box & cables and the Suzuki Monitor System Gauge and wiring.

The Merc nothing but the outboard.

The Suzuki is a non-current year 1998 never used with a three-year warranty.

Thanks,

Get the suzuki, several friends run them and they swear by them. Only problem I know about is when rebuilding carbs be sure and follow manual exactly on float setting.

Because of EPA regs and running on 2 cylinders at idle, the 85 might not be what you want if you do a lot of trolling. Not that the Merc's any different. You just have to be aware that the larger 2-strokes have made concessions in operability to accomodate EPA regulations.

You can buy a 5 year warrenty on the Merc but what can Suzuki do. Gotta consider dealers after the buy. Merc is well established. Obviously, You can guess what my recommendation is...

Merc's stood by me like no other people. I don't know how Suzuki would treat you.

Re: Suzuki 2-stroke vs Mercury 2-stroke

I have an old 7.5 merc and a 15hp Suzuki on my sons boat that are about the same age. The Suzuki is a as rotten as an anchor wheras the merc shows little sign of any corrosion. I would have imagined that Suzuki have long since addressed this problem. I have always regarded the finish of Merc / Mariner to be the best there is in a saltwater environment and were I to buy another engine as a long term investment I would still go for Merc for longleivity.
In terms of reliability the Suzuki was suberb but it does seem to be made of grossly inferior metal and finish.

Just my thoughts.
Andy

bkelly,

dmessy, made a VERY good point. The dealer is the difference. Buy where you trust they can service.

I've owned Suzukis, nothing wrong with them, but dealer service can be RARE-depending on where you live.

Both engines are 3-cyl. I would expect performance to be close. I operate, quite often, a 2001 Merc. 75 on a pontoon and it's a nice, smooth engine.

In my neck of the woods, I would pay more for the Merc. simply because of the availabilty of service and parts.

Thanks a lot guys,

Well I got the run around with the Suzuki dealer. Sure, we can finance, bring your boat and we will take care of you. Get there and we can’t finance that motor but can get it on a credit card. OHHH H*ll NO.

The Mercury dealer gave me a good deal for this area and included a SS prop with it. Credit went through and the 75hp is on its way. Should have it ready buy Thursday or Friday. He is also good on service. :D
