Started working on a 1974 mercury 65 hp 3 cylinder motor. No spark... replaced the switch box with a CDI switch box... Still no spark... Stator looks fine... winding are not covered with plastic. Jumping the motor over with pos on starter and neg on starter right to the battery. Do i need to add the controls to get the system charged?? or should i have spark... no spark here

Do the easy stuff first. Check the ignition switch, check all your connections, grounds, etc.

c/6

Hooty

YOU NEED TO ISOLATE THE BOAT FROM THE ENGINE YOU NEED TO DISCONNECT THE KILL WIRE ON THE SWITH BOX ITS THE BLACK WIRE WITH THE YELLOW TRACER. IF YOU HAVE FIRE THE PROBLEM IS IN THE HARNESS OR KEY SWITCH. IF YOU STILL HAVE NO FIRE YOU NEED TO CHECK THE STATOR. CHECK IT FOR OHMS FIRST THEN YOU NEED A DVA METER TO CHECK OUT PUT THIS STATOR IT HAS A LOW AND HIGH SPEED COILS. YOU NEED TO GO IN ORDER OF HOW THE SYSTEM OR YOU WILL CHASE YOU TAIL. KILL CIRCUIT,STATOR,SWITHBOX,TRIGGER,COIL. TOTAL IGNITION FAILURE IS CAUSED BY THE KILL CIRCUIT, STATOR OR SWITHBOX. VINNEY.

I cant match your engine to my diagrams without a serial number. If your engine has a distributor it may have a battery powered cdi ignition. You need harness and ignition switch connected to supply power to the switchbox, at least 9.5 volts while cranking. If your engine does not have distributor, post serial number.

The motor is equiped with a stator, switchbox(brand new from CDI) and a 1 Coil (also replaced with CDI) It has a distributor on it also. The ignition switch is fine and the harness is also fine. I have a few control boxes and the same problem no spark!!! I am thinking of just going ahead and changing the stator..... I have a Digital meter so i can check the OHMS on the stator.. what should the reding be???? as I crank it or standing still?? Also how to connect it thank you

If the stator only has two wires, the ignition is a battery powered cdi. I would check the trigger/sensor in the distributor, and the mercury switch located close to the switchbox. I think the red wire to switchbox is hot all the time and the white wire from switch to switchbox is a switched hot wire. You can verify the wire connections by calling Rapair tech services. The cdi switchbox does not like low voltage, high voltage, bad grounds, or jumper wires.

Already switched the distributor out with another from another used motor like it... still no spark. The other thing that is mounted to the switch box..... little rectangle mounted switch... isnt that a merc tilt switch so it cant be started in the up position????? I took it off becuase there was no place to put it on the new switchbox.... not color coratinated. thanks any more help would be appreciated.

Could be the other distributor has a bad sensor/trigger. Do you have power to the red wire, and white wire from switchbox to switch in control handle?
