MERCURY 110,9.8HP TILLER STUCK

I just bought this mercury 9.8hp outboard fitted to a dinghy,and when i got home i found<br />that the tiller is stuck ,where it pivots,as i do not want to cruise in circles what am i to do?<br />is it a difficult job for a handyman.the manuals that i have seen do not cover this problem.

Somewhere on the clamp bracket assembly there should be a grease fitting that leads to the pivot tube. Depending on the year, it may be up under the clamp saddle or it might be plainly visible on the side of the clamp saddle. The saddle is the part of the clamp assembly that the actual clamps are attached to and which pivots to turn the motor. You might be able to back out the grease fitting and flood the pivot tube with a penetrating oil. Also, try some heat from a propane torch, as the saddle is cast aluminum and the pivot tube is steel - they expand at different rates. Once you get it loosened up, grease it well and hit the water!<br />- Scott
