Several years ago, I bought a boat with a 1979 Mariner 80 outboard.
From the the beginning I had a problem with the spark. There were times
that you could start the engine easily and then the next time there was no spark or very weak one.
I replaced the switch box, the internal and externa l harness. I tried to start it......it started right away.
Then a couple days later I would try to staart it ....no spark. I replaced the trigger ...it started, but days later nothing .
I took it to a mechanic and he said the starter was dragging and he replaced it....it started.
I took it out on the water,it ran fine. Several days later I tried to start it again....no spark.
After replacing the entire electical sysem, it still acts the way way it did in the beginning. I
don't know what do do next. The compression is good.....it should run.
Help!
Robert

bugman ,When you say the entire electrical system has been replaced are you including the stator assy?Sounds like you could have a grounding problem within system and stator is possible source.
