I've got an Aussie assembled Mercury Blueband 85 HP with Thunderbolt ignition. It has 850 on the cowling and the serial number is 2991501.
The Clymer manual I have indicates this number is an 800. (inside the 2991034-3052380 range)
What year is this motor, is this an 800 or 850 model. Has someone simply changed cowling?

That number is for a 1971 80 hp. Cowling might have been changed. Not unusual. Many are interchangeable.
If you look on the motor for a welsh plug, that would give you another number for verification.

Thanks Mike
I could understand the cowling being replaced but this also has a 85HP decal on it. I can't get any history on it to verify and I'm struggling with finding the welch plug. The workshop manual describes quite clearly where it should be but the picture doesn't look like what I've got. Any comments?
No big deal. 71 to 75 is close enough for me.
I tried your webpage but couldn't email you thru it.
Thanks again.

Hey kev, is your engine a 4 or 6 cyl? If it is a 4 cyl, it's most likely a 1971, 80 hp. But............... If it's a 6 cyl, it could be a 1964 85 hp. .....Bob in Calif.....

KiwiKev,
Bob in Calif is right didn't even notice that motor.
In reference to email, thanks for the heads up but it worked for me, maybe a glitch at the time you tried.
Regards

I tried to send that message eralier yesterday, but I think AOL was having problems with their servers. I was able to send it at least once, but it didn't show up on the board, then I got an error message and my computer froze up.
.........Bob in Calif........
