forward gear is out on old mercury

Ihave a mercury outboard sn#958803 it is green not black. The forward gear is not working. I've got the foot off of it but I can't get the shaft and gear apart.How can I do this and can I get parts for it? Thanks for your help. J.L.Crouch

suggest reding a manual this a challenge that requires some knowlege and some special tools chilton or seloc have good manuals out. when you put it back to gether your shimming is vital !!!!

jlc, <br />The HP would be helpful, also. Many numbers match up to different HP motors.

I'm guessing you mean a Mark 25. I would suggest getting the 1965 and prior Mercury service manual, available from Grubb's Marine at www.oldmercs.com . You'll need to make a tool or two out of some pipe stock to get it apart. The gears themselves are not actually attached to the propshaft. The pinion gear is bolted to the driveshaft...<br />- Scott
