In my service manual the idle screw is used to set up low speed timing! If I want to lower or raise my idle will it effect my timing if I turn this screw? My problem is after a high speed run, when I return the throttle handle to neutral the RPMs race up to about 1300RPM. If I sit for a couple of minutes it eventually idles back to about 750 RPM. If I shift at the higher RPM the engine really clunks into gear.(Not good).I took my engine to dealer to have timing checked and this is when problem started. I noticed that the throttle cam and roller adjustment mark was changed from the original factory setting. I'd like to re-adjust according to my manual but the timing is the thing that I'm afraid of. I don't know how to do it, and I don't have the equipment.I don't want to go back to dealer. Lots of problems there. So if I make any idle speed or linkage adjustments will i screw up timing ?Thankyou for your time!

Not if you follow the steps in the Mercury service manual. The idle is adjusted with engine in water in gear. The final idle is adjusted, by changing the idle timing.

Thanks Clanton but I'm still confused by your answer. Any idea whats causing the high RPMS when I bring it back to neutral after a high speed run ?

If the dealer incorrectly adjusted some of the linkage, you need to check all linkage and adjust as needed, which means you need a timing light. When all of the adjustments are correct, and you still have high idle, check for fuel restriction, air leaks, bleed hoses, loose control cable.

Thanks for your reply clanton. I guess I'll have to locate another dealer this stuff is way over my head. The problem is the dealers in our area mostly are not on the water. They don't want to take the time, or really listen to what your telling them. I hope things are better down south!
