They are excellent outboards, I have a 78 model on a 16ft Cajun and I love it, having some problems now, but that is my fault not the engines. These are very powerful engines, and once you get it perfectly tuned you will not be sorry you bought it. Mix your gas at 50:1.

As nathan stated, very good motors.
They will give you years of service if taken care of.

Keep eye on lower unit grease for any water, change your water pump impellar and keep it tuned up good and you should have no problems.

Hi Steve,

I ´ve had bad look with my old 1150 merc.
I broke the engine 3 times..., maybe due to lean mixture... Also other problem with starter, problem with the control box,...
I think that old johnrude are stronger than old merc...
After that experienced, I bought a 200 Evinrude 1980 and was great motor.Unforgetable...
I don´t want an old merc anymore.
Now I have a 200 merc 1992 and 275 mariner and they are very good engines.
Thanks

Carlos
Saludos desde Venezuela

99.9% of motors are good to start, but without
proper maintainence can go south fast!
my merc 1150 runs like a top and has 110psi
+/- 5psi on all 6 cyliders. how she's been
taken care of over the years is much more
relevant than which particular model/mfg.
you could do a whole lot worse IMHO.
my .02,
M.Y.
