I have never worked on a power Trim System so this is new to me. If I Trim the motor up it leaks down (5 Minutes from top to bottom).I looked in the manual and noticed it has a Manual Release Valve the screw was out about 3 turns so I turned it back in (tight) Now it leaks down from top to bottom in about 45 minutes. The Release Valve has 3 O-rings, I would assume I should change these first and see if it stops the fall. The "leak" is internal since no fluid leaks out. Just looking for some input on this.Oh yeah the O-ring on the fill hole and fluid level are good. 1995 40 HP Mercury

I'm not overly familiar with the Mercury Manual Release valve, but if it is damaged, It can cause this problem. I'd replace the valve and O rings to see if that fixes the problem. If not, then you have a leak internally and these units are a series of check valves and O rings. The parts may not be very expensive, but the labor can be.

shooter,

Replacing the o'rings certainly won't hurt anything.

I would bet you lost some fluid though. That can be contributing to your slow leak down.

Thanks ICEMAN and djohns19,The manual says to tilt the motor up to releave the pressure. Now I should be able to pull the fill cap screw and the release valve screw to drain the fluid and change the O-rings on the release valve. Is that correct? And then to fill, put in release valve fill with fluid put fill cap on tilt motor down then back up check and add more fluid if needed. This sound right to anyone who has done this before.

Shooter,

Yes, you have the procedure correct. There also may be a bracket that swivels down to hold the engine in the highest position. If not, block it up somehow so that it doesn't fall accidentely.

I would put something under the engine cause once you take this apart there will be no pressure to hold the engine in the upright position.
