I'm looking to buy a new motor for a boat I just acquired. The boat can handle a max of an 85 HP engine. I've been looking at a 75 HP 2003 Merc at Bass Pro Shop for $6500.

Two questions.... 1.) What is the advantage of a two-stroke vs. a four-stroke? 2.) Is the $6500 a fair asking price or would I get taken to the cleaners if I bought it.

I've been a fisherman for 27 years and decided it's finally time to get that boat for out of state trips. Any help would be most appreciated. God bless.

Re: Newby Question

the 4-stroke are quiter, idel without loading-up, and are better on fuel consumption.

2-strokes; power to weight ratio. established marine technology, fewer moving parts (if that means anything to you) and so far - much less $$$ for a given hp.

Which is better? I wont go near that question except to say, how will you be using the motor?

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

Re: Newby Question

Hey Jammer i cant answer either question but myself i would like to own a four stroke someday because they dont pollute as much and they do run quiet i hear, also some states...(california i believe) already quit selling 2 strokes. hope u find some good answers i will be checking this post myself to see watt the techs and pros say about it, either way good luck and good fishing Jammer. :)

Nr. 1
If the boat is rated for 85 HP, put an 85 HP engine on it. The boat will just work better with the max. hp. and you'll be happier.

Nr. 2
Two cycle engines are basically simpler then four stroke. No valves, pushrods, timing gears, etc. They're also quite a bit lighter.

Nr. 3
I don't know about engine prices but you might want to check here at iboats for an engine. At the top of this page beside "Helpful Links" is Outboard Motors". Click on there and see what they have.

Hope this helps.

c/6

Hooty

Re: Newby Question

I'm not sure about the lakes in Illinois or the surrounding area, but one of the largest lakes here in Nevada has banned two-stroke engines.
You may find more fishing locations available to you with a four-stroke engine.
