Hi I have a 1981 80hp merc, and I have re-built and replaced the needle and seat several times on the top carburator, but it keeps on sticking closed after the engine is run and tilted up. Any ideas would be apperciated.

Welcome to iboats.com, John.

Iether the float is sticking at the hinge, or garbage has again gotten past the filter, or varnish has formed, "painting" the needle into posistion, if they leak when level.
As for tilting the motor, this is normal..All outboards will leak fuel form a full carb when the motor is tilted.

they are notorious for sticking... a gentle tap
on the bowl is all it takes. otherwise refer to
12footer's advice above.
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: needle valve failure

Thanks for the advice. I will go through the carb one more time. If the float is set too high, would that cause the needle to stick closed?

John
Make sure the float is not hitting the side of the bowl. This will cause it to stick.
