I need to get a new battery for my Mercury outboard. I'm new to boating. What is a good battery to buy? I want the best. Brand. Type. and anything else I should know about batteries. Thanks!

brianmerc, this is just my preference, but I always buy Sears die-hards for my boat.

Cranking and deep-cycle.

Have always had good luck with them.

Had one bad battery and they replaced it with no questions.

Just my .02 worth.

Awesome! I just got the Sears paper today and the Marine/RV Deep Cycles are on sale for $56.99 or something like that. Thanks!

Of course, you would want to get the "Starting" Battery, if that's what you are using it for..

That is a battery powered ignition system on that year engine, you need at least a 1000 cold cranking amp battery

Any Johnson Controls battery, marine deep cycle, group 27 would be more than sufficient. The link takes you to the site that list brands they stick on the side of their batteries(which is most all of the aforementioned):
web page

brianmerc

Your engine has an "un-regulated" battery charging system. When then egine is up and running it will develope about 17 volts.

According to the Mercury service manual you should use a starting type battery with caps over the cells. That way you can monitor the electrolyte level.

If memory serves me I think the manual recommends a 500 CCA size. (I bought a 650 CCA and it seems to work fine).

This subject has been discussed here before - try a search for more info.

Good Luck,

Gold Bear ;)
