I have a 60 hp mariner outboard that runs great and when engaged prop turns at idle speed, but give it throttle the prop does not respond along with motor speed, is there a shear pin, or some kind of clutch on the output shaft? I need an exploded diagram of the lower unit, or info on this problem. I know it's had to happen to someone out there! Thanks

cruisinhard,

You've been cruisin TOO hard. ;) Sorry couldn't help it.

Your prop hub is probably spun. The rubber hub is turning inside the prop. Any prop shop can re-hub it for you.

Hello, Prop may be the problem, but with motor off and engaged in forward gear, I can turn prop and hear clicking inside lower case. any ideas on that? It feels like a one way clutch not engaging securely, are you able to freewheel the prop and shaft while in gear? Also ;) I just got the boat and motor at a very good price, I found out Sunday why!!!!!!!

cruisinhard,

What you are experiencing by turning the prop with the engine off is normal.. You are overriding the clutch dog.

Hey thanks for the info, I'm going to check the prop a bit closer, it's pretty dinged up and I may just replace it. Nothing like a new challenge with a really old (1971) boat and motor.

well, I went out and verified the prop problem, How much does it cost on average to have a prop bushing put in? Is it something I may could do myself? I do mechanic work on cars for a living, but it may take special tools to install.

Thanks, Ray

Cruisin,

If the prop is aluminum, you can have the WHOLE thing re-done for under $100.00, in most areas.

It'll be just like new.
