Well on my 17.5 ft fiberglass bass boat with the 1976 115 hp merc, that has a boggin down out of the hole, and is turnning at 6000 rpms, I've emliminated the prop, the hydrofoil, iregulartys in the hull. So now, I left to assume that the fact that the cave plate is about 1" high from the bottom of the boat that this is the cuase of my problems, or could it be plugs.. in any event I plan to have th motor tuned and tweaked, have to get the rpms down at WOT 6000 is awfull high, but I need a beeter hole shot, its tuff to get the boat going.. My question is, what kind of work should I have done to the boat, and on average how much $$$$ am I looking at spending, and what kind of eta could I expect? I knwo it hard to estimate theese type of things, but a round about number would help make my decession, not sure if I even what to put this kind of money in this old boat and motor..

Thanks,
Thomas

Re: WHAT to do??

howdy Tex,
how did you eliminate the prop? read another post
where your turning a 24 pitch...did you try another
prop yet? 24 seems aweful high to me. I run a
19 on my 1150 at 5500rpms on a 16' open bow that
weighs 1050lbs.
has anyone confirmed that the extra 1" high
cav. plate is def. the problem?
v.curious now...
as for maint $:
r/r 3 carbs $450 is biggest expense.
make sure they adjust timing and idle under load.
need a test prop or on the water to adjust properly.
M.Y.

Re: WHAT to do??

I didnt completly eliminate the prop, the guy at my local shop said it was in fair condition and would not be cuasing the problems I'm experincing, actually it was a 21 p prop, the 24p must had been a type-o. No one one has comfirmed the cav as the source of the problems..

Thanks,
Thomas

Fuel starvation is still a issue, buT i don't think it is the source of the problem. How can I see if my tach is bad or not. TH l/u seemd to check out ot be the original.. i actually have no history on the boat b4 it landed in my backyard.

Thanks

Re: WHAT to do??

boaterntexas,
i have to respond to your last post. why do assume you are "in for a rapeing now" ? as a marine engine tech. i find this statement very rude! if you don't trust the shop don't use them. it is very frustrating to sit here and pass out free tech. info, trying to help build the boating sport only have people who can't perform there own work to assume that anyone that they have to pay is going to "rape" them. you do have a choice , don't fix it. there are plenty of books and tech schools that teach what many of us have spent our lives learning. please don't insult me and other pro's here with generalized statements.
just curious what do you do for a living? my guess is that it is not in a service related industry? if you are you have a lot to learn.
enjoy yur boat and your summer and remmeber it was yur choice to pay for the repair. :( :(

Re: WHAT to do??

Merctech, sorry for the remark, it was not to be directed to techs in general, but only my local shops we only have one or two, and I have been told not to take it to either on of them without a good understanding of the situation, they have the market cornered here and will charge outrageous prices for long drawn out repairs. And you right I do have a choice, I dont have to get it fixed, but I want to so I'll take my rapeing and be glad I did so. Sorry If I offened any of the tech or staff of this site, ya'll offer great advice here. and to answer your question on what I do for a living, I'm actually a service manager for a office supplies firm we service copiers, faxes, laser printers, typewriters, folder, and pcs. So yes I do work in the service industry, and some people do assume that they will get ripped of when they bring there machine to us for repairs, we tend to prove them wrong and do so with a smile, I haev never taken it personal when I customer tells me that they don't want to ripped off, I know the quality product that my tech put out, and have no problem standing behind it.

Again I do appologize to you directly Merctech, I sorry is I upset you or offended you in anyway, you are awesome I'm worhtless, you are the master tech I'm the lowsey peoin, You are smart I am stupid, You are good looking I'm not, You are well mannaered I'm a buligirant redneck from texas who can't type nor spell. You are The one and only master of all, I'm a mook, pheasant, scallywag, scoundrool. Thanks for bringin my disregard for other to my attention I will refrian form posting anythign more that may offended others, epsecially techs.

Sorry,
Thomas

Re: WHAT to do??

thomas,
no apology needed, you only made a statement that is all to often thought and not said. i just needed to vent. maybe i will post a complete topic and essay on the board so everyone can see both sides. i started my own business for these very reasons. please don't hesitate to post anytime. i enjoy boats and helping boaters or i would not spend the time typing, because i am not that good at it.

Re: WHAT to do??

Your right merc, people fear that since they don't know anythign about the motor, or car, or copier, computer, or whateve it is that they are having serviced that they may be taken advadtage of. Thats why places like this very imformative, and helpfull site come in handing, It's nice to get free advice, and educated ourselfs at teh same time. I have learned so much about boats, and boat motors by just reading random post here. I have a website for paintball www.spyderea.net ( had to plug that in there ;) ) with a forum on it that is no where near this large, it's still a handfull to maintain, and keep clean. thanks to the moderators here, and well experinced posters like yourself this has become my favortie site on the web. Thanks for your time and effort, and to teh staff of this site awesome job, keep up the good work.

Thomas
