will my 1974 merc #110 9.8 hp start in gear or is there a neutral safty start some place ? still have not got this motor to run yet. it would run a few second on carb cleaner. when sprayed into carb. it was stuck in REV now i got it in Neutral. not sure if it jumped a tooth or so on the shift rod to the shift lever ? i have a Seloc manual. but it don't say anything about trouble shooting. Gee's thats what i bought it for.i broke the recoil rope when i was getting it to run a sec or two "very old rope" replaced the rope now nothing won't even pop  broke rope again after 30-40 pulls "new rope" guess i need a stronger rope or a longer rope looks like it broke at the pin on the pulley. any help would be great. thanks ...Les

Hi Leserz
If you have the manual then you have all the help you need.It would be impossible to write a book for every detailed problem that might come up with a machine. Who knows what might happen. the best they can do is explain how things are supposed to work. You read the book, then compare the info against what you have. These book will take you step by step through the process of repairing your motor. You have to invest a little time and let it.

I think it will start in gear if the mechanical block is disconnected. Having not seen your motor I would guess that the start in gear protection is a mechanical device that disables the pull start or locks it so that you cannot pull the starting cord. This is usually activated when the forward gear is selected. In respect of the engine if you could pull the cord there is no reason why the motor will not start as I don't believe the mechanical stop has any connection to the electics or fuel part of the engine.

This is just a guess based on my own engine. Really more details of your problem/ situation are required for the more expertly qualified to give you an answer.

I'm sittin here studying this shematic (Clymer manual), and I think you're right. I see no starter cutoff switch or other method of preventing it from starting in gear!
Hmm...I learn something new every day! I have the manual-start 7.5 on my 12Footer, and the pull cord cannot be pulled in gear...But other than that, I see no electrical circuits on iether manual or 'lectric start models.
And 7.5 or 9.8 models, samey-same.

On the electric start models the shift lever blocks the start button when it is in gear. Thats why you don't see anything in the schematic.
