Can anyone out there tell me if I HAVE to use Mercury two cycle oil or can I use any good oil for my mixture. They guy that sold me the boat said the Merc motors (outboards) required "Merc" oil. Am I safe to use another brand?

This may have just been a marketing deal for Merc, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks

Does he own stock in Merc? Seriously though I have used the Shell (low smoke) 2 stroke oil for the last 5 years in my 1976 Merc 1500 and it's still running fine

Hi, Johnson.

Merc and Yammy employees and fans are fond of telling people that "you gotta use" their brand of TC-W3 outboard oil.

Not so. Any TC-W3 rated outboard oil will work just fine.

If you want to read a debate on the subject, check the thread, "2 stroke oil is 2 stroke oil, is 2 stroke oil" .

Thanks! Yeah, I think he was suckered into thinking that he had to use Merc for some reason. I actually have some really good Havoline I have been using. Little spendy, but does the trick.
