I have a 1976 Mercury 1150 engine with power trim. The engine comes down with no problem, but when I want to bring the engine up, it doesn't at first. When I hit the up button, it just makes a click sound, as if something is stuck and needs to be unstuck. So I keep hitting the button over and over about 10 times, until the engine finally comes up. What could the problem be? Where would the "click" sound be coming from?? Sounds like it's coming from the little "box" where I have to add the hydrolic oil for the power trim. I dont know exactly what thats called. I dont know much about boats. PLEASE HELP!!

brian,

The click you are hearing is a relay. You have one for up and one for down. They're in that box you described.

Take the cover off of the box and clean things up in there. You may want to try switching the two relays. Your problem may then be reversed. That will tell you which relay is giving you trouble.

I just changed out my two relays on my 200. it fixed the problem. There is a way to test them with the ohm meter but mine ohm testing never seems to be correct. cost me almost 40 dollars for two relays. I hear the electric motor that works the hydralics doesn't go out much.

Thanks everyone for your input. A relay? Okay. Hmmm.... Also, what is the exact name for the box that I described?

Also, I think there might have been air in the hydrolic lines. Is there a way to bleed them? I filled the "box" with more oil. Will that help?

THANKS!

brian,

I am not that familiar with the older Merc. trim systems.

However, if you hear clicking, that is a relay. You should be able to feel it if you hold your hand on that "box". Without looking at it I can't tell you how to get it apart.

Also, make sure the clicking is not coming from another component further upstream (toward the control button) in the wiring harness.

Brian--If your motor has tilt and trim rams on the outside of the motor, not between the transom mounts, and your motor and resivor are internal in the boat, near where you add the fluid you should see what looks like an older ford starter solenoid. There are two on some systems and one on others. Get someone else to activate your trim up and down, you can feel the click you are hearing and that will tell you which solenoid is bad. IT may be that the wire contacts are corroded or the solenoid could be bad itself. If so I recommend that you use only marine approved solenoids. Especially if there is a chance of fuel vapors as not all automotive solenoids are totally sealed and may spark causing a fire. Also Brian I recommend you get a factory manual on your motor as it will address the trim system better than most after market manuals.
HOPE this helps.

Re: ***** HELP!! POWER TRIM - ENGINE WON'T COME UP!!!! *****

Thanks you guys for the info. I'll have to play with it after Memorial Weekend. I'm off to the lake this weekend. Hopefully my engine will come up & out of the water. Hopefully, I won't to have to do it manually. That will be embarrassing!
