HI guys, newbie here to forum & to boating . just bought a boat & out board motor . the guy i bought it from didn't know what type of boat it was or if it even ran . it was his fathers who recently died & just wanted to get rid of it . i picked it up for $100.00 . it's a 20' fiberglass boat with wind shield & steering wheel he told me he thought it was a 1970 wasn't sure what make . It's got a mercury 500 50 hp 4 cylinder motor . serial # 1519547 i assume thats the serial # it's stamped into the block on top of the motor there's no tag on the motor anywhere. my question is can anyone tell mr what year the motor is so i can pick up a maint. manual . i checked that swiss site but couldn't find my serial # it only went back to 1965 . it looks exactly like a 1970 i seen on ebay but i just don't know . well any way igot the motor running . just had to clean up yhe ignition system new wires, plugs, clean up the points &coil connections . it runs great i hope it runs this good when i get it in the water . sorry for the long post . and hope you can help .

the starting serial number for a 1963 model 500 was 1552535 so I would guess yours is a year or two older..maybe '61-'62

Hello! i'm a newbee too! i see i'm not the only one who can't seem to get info on their motor! i've examined the whole motor....but there's a stamped number on the bracket attaching to the transom...it states SERIAL NO. 1869622 but no where within the iboat site can i find that number or anything close. The only thing im sure of is that it's a 65merc. kiekhaefer. I replaced the spark plugs, got a new battery, and it starts, but it's backfiring, runs, but once i put the 'cold start' lever back down it stalls, and if i try to drive with the cold start on or 'up', it goes a few seconds and still stalls. What i'm wondering, is...other than changing the spark plugs..what do i do to bring this old girl back up to par? any ideas? i hate to give up on her....
