Re: lower unit

If it is not the shift rod the spleens on the end of the drive shaft might not be lining up with your engine. Try shifting the linkage on your lower unit into forward gear. When you turn the prop clockwise the drive shaft should turn as well. Thread the shift linkage through the hole and try to install the lower unit to the engine. If it wont go all the way up try turning the prop clockwise to line the spleens up. Be Sure your plug wires are disconnected. I dont think the motor could start but might not hurt.

I have a merc 75 1970 model. Had the same problem a couple of weeks ago untill i put the lower unit and shift in foreward gear. It slipped in with ease.

Re: lower unit

I too had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't get the drive-shaft, water pump, & shift rod to all line up at the same time. I looped a piece of string through the shift rod and put it through the hole to help me guide it in as I slid the lower unit on. I had my girlfriend hold the drive-shaft(with her smaller hands) while I slid the the lower on. It took a couple of times, but it does go back on. I promise.

Re: lower unit

I had a similar problem, but after I put the lower unit back on and tried starting the engine, it won't start. I have a Mercury 7.5 serial no. 6240631. When I tried starting it, there was water coming out of my carb. I took the lower unit back off and noticed a o-ring laying inside, I am not sure where this o-ring goes, I am thinking it goes at the end where the long drive shaft has a notch. Anyone have any ideas, I would appreciate your help.

Re: lower unit

There was water, it may have been that it was run hot since the impeller went out. I hope not.
