I have a late 60's or 70 model 110 Mercury 9.8 hp that lower spark plug will not fire. Points have been checked also the spark plug. Suppect the magneto is defective, need to know how to test and where one could be purchased if needed. kinfine@bellsouth.net

I'd suspect the coil. Switch the coils to see if the miss moves with the coil.
Backlash

Re: 9.8 Mercury ignition problem

Please post your motor's serial number. Mercury changed a lot of ignition stuff on the 9.8s between 1967 and 1972. You could have maker or breaker points depending on the ignition...
- Scott

Re: 9.8 Mercury ignition problem

Your motor is a 1968 model, so it has breaker points, with coils & condensers. If your points are spotless and gapped at .018", I would suspect the condensers. I've rarely had any problems with the coils if that era. Condensers can be had through your Merc dealer or NAPA, West Marine, etc. or anyone who carries Sierra parts. The Sierra part number is 18-5212, OEM # is 398-2203...
- Scott
