Steering off

My boat ( Sleekcraft, 1973 restored with 1973 Mercury 115 HP outboard) was steering fine until this weekend when it became unable to turn to the right.
Nothing changed, or happened that I am aware of, but it just acts like it is stuck. It turns to the left fine, but only a fourth of the way to the right.
The rod that runs in front of the motor that the cable connects to is fine and is still stopping where it always did.
I have taken everything apart and put it back together and have found nothing wrong.
Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong or have you had this happen? Lost.
chngingtymes@kc.rr.com

Re: Steering off

First thing to do is to figgure where the problem is. Disconnect the steering mechanism from the motor. If the motor then turns free the problem is with the steering mechanism (possible cable?).

Re: Steering off

Thanks for the response. I disconnected the cable from the motor, and it moves freely, and then I disconnected the steering wheel and it moves freely.
I even took apart the steering chamber and looked at the rod and gears and all looked fine.
I have never been so baffled by anything before. It turns easily, and everything is lined up.
While I had the steering chamber apart, I had the motor turned back and forth while I watched the gear bar move back and forth inside the chamber, and it moved fine.
I am at a stand still for I have never seen this kind of thing.
Thanks for your help, for it is very much appreciated.
D.
