Merc 150 XR2 fuel starvation

My 150XR2 is will run at wot for about 3 minutes and then will lose power. I can back off a hair and leave my hand off the throttle and engine will pick up power by itself and start to rev up again and then will fall back. I ran the boat for 50 miles on Sunday and had no problems at all. If I squeeze the bulb while its running the bulb flattens out and will not expand again (this sounds like it might be normal lf no leaks in hose). I changed the fuel filter on the port side of engine. Any ideas on this problem?

Try rebuilding your fuel pump.

"bulb flattens and does not expand again" Sounds like a bad bulb, or you can't draw fuel from tank (tank not venting, kinked fuel line between bulb and tank, or anti siphon device fouled up)pull bulb (clean ends) and blow air through it (with your mouth) should blow air in direction of arrow and should be difficult to blow in reverse. Check tank venting and anti siphon valve if applicable, some boats have water separator between tank and bulb, could be fouled up as well. I cant see your fuel pump leaving your bulb collapsed...

One more thing... This is just a suggestion, not meant to step on any toes... This post could have remained in the GENERAL OUTBOARD section, as it probably has little or nothing to do with it being a Mercury. Folks experienced with Johnny Rudes, Yammies or others could help out as well. Posters may find themselves with less help if they mention the make of their outboard in some cases.. Just food for thought.
