1991 90HP does it need oil besides the gas mix?

I recently purchased a pontoon with a 91 Mercury engine, serial number OD013333, it only has about 100 hours on it. I do not have an owner's manual for it and have a couple newbie questions that I was unable to find doing a search. On the side of the engine is a site glass which is supposed to indicate what I am assuming is oil level. I am wondering if this needs to be filled along with the gas mix or wheter this is a direct injection model or both. If it needs separate oil, what type and how do I fill it, I see no fill cap? Does the engine cover had to come off? It has a Quicksilver console and was wondering what the beeps indicate? I get a continous beep with the trim fully down but it turns off if I give it just a bit of trim...oil warning or overheating? Finally does Mercury offer their owner's manual online in PDF format or must I buy one? The out of state marina I bought the boat from took me for a test drive and went over the boat with me and purchase but never made mention of this resevoir. TIA

Geo in Cleveland

Hey Geo!

You open the cover (cowling) by pulling the left side (viewed from the boat, facing the motor) of the hinged front-cover with the Merc. decal. Then release the spring-loaded lock. Now you can turn both halves of the cover away (and even lift them off.

The oil reservoir is to be kept full.

Use two-stroke oil with TWC-3 rating, preferably of a known brand.

The alarm sounds a self-test when key is turned. After that it indicates low oil or heat warning. When it start beeping for oil you have sufficient for about an hour at full speed.

The motor is running on plain unleaded 87 oct fuel without oil. It simply adds oil (from the reservoir) as needed (variable range 80:1 to 50:1) when it runs.

The original owners manual is pretty good but I'd suggest an aftermarket manual (link on this page) as it goes more into detail and is explanatory.

Thanks for the quick reply, when I had it at the gas dock they put 2 things of oil in the gas tank and then added about 12 gallons of gas. So you are saying that I do not need to add oil to the gas tank and instead just run plain gas and keep the oil in the engine resevoir? What is it's approx capacity...quart, gallon, pint?

Then the gas-man made you run double oil rate.

You're right: Oil in the oil reservoir ONLY an plain fuel in the fuel tank ONLY. The motor mixes by itself by blending the two.

Only thing to do currently is top her up with fuel only whenever you can, to thin out that excess oil in the fuel tank.

I do not have the manual with me just now, but there is a measure on the reservoir. I always carry a spare bottle, but if you fill it up every now and then you'll be fine. The reservoir holds enough for several tanks of fuel.
