Had my 1989 Merc 200 HP in the shop yesterday for repairs/maintence. New Head gasket, water pump impeller, shaft seal for lower unit, pressure test and new plugs. Charged me 4 1/2 hours labor. Sounds a little high to me or is that just book time?? I was thinking more along the line of 3 hours.

By the sounds of it you went in for lack of water?

What I would have charged. .5 hours for the head gasket.

1 hour for the waterpump.

.5 for the shiftshaft seal<---actually probebly would have thrown the labour in for free...as I was there already doing the Waterpump.

.5 to test.

So we have 2 hours...so $130.00

TMD

Thanks for the reply, I didn't get a chance to talk with the shop owner when I picked up my boat, so called them back this AM and asked why the extra time. Said he had found water in the lower unit and pressue tested and found a leak at the shift shaft. The owner said he did most of the work himself and he charged flat rate. The guy is a friend, he gets me in and out in the same day, kind of hard to complain to him since he treats me well. I just wanted know for my own satifaction, now I know and am happy.

I think it's fair. The book time is flat rate. You are partially paying for his expertise. That does not come cheap.

In and out in one day! You should send the guy a gift.
