Last week when on vacation I used my 15 hp Mercury pretty much every day.

The Merc is rigged with remote throttle and steering.
One day after over two hours use I beached the boat for about 1/2 hour. When I went to start it up the motor fired on the first pull, then quit a few secants later. I pull the cord again, same thing......runs and stalls.

I then moved the control to about 1/4 throttle, and pulled a 3ed time. The motor then started and revved high, I moved the throttle back down and drove home.

The next afternoon the motor did the same thing, it has every time since I've tried to start it. I guess its not a problem I just rev it and it go's fine, but I know its not normal.

What has caused this to happen?
Is this something that should be fixed, or should I just live with it?

Thanks for the help,
Ryan

Re: Starting prolbems.

Could be a speck of dirt in the carb.

Or it could be water from that darned pressure washer.

Is this on your free wooden boat?
Have you used it?

Re: Starting prolbems.

No,
This is on my Boston Whaler. Its a 1975 11-Sport

I have not used the wooden boat much. I've refinished the inside, its really looking nice.

Prolbem is, I've got two boats and only one trailer. I have a 1987 8hp Mercury that I'm going to use on the wooden boat this fall, we'll see how it go's.

I've had it in the water once, I droped it into a pond thats does not alow motors, just to make sure the it did not sink, and was not waterlogged. It sits on its lines real good, a very nice looking boat in the water.

I had someone look at the transom, they told me that a motor has NEVER been on the boat.

What the boat really needs is a classic motor that go's with the hull.....I may pick up the trailer for it and sell the whole thing as a boat, motor and trailer package......we'll see.

I found another free boat last week on vacation!!! its in someone's yard. It is about 27feet long. Its an old wooden lobster boat. No trailer and no motor.....looks like it would make a good bond fire :D Not worth fixing.
Anyone who is intersted, the boats in Wells Maine.

Back to my 15hp Mercury,
last night I started it in the back yard for a freshwater flush, started and did not stall, so I don't know what the hells up with the thing now.

Re: Starting prolbems.

IMO:
needle and seat in carb are sticking. Time for a carb re-build.
