I have never owned a boat of any kind and I've come across a old 14ft fiberglass boat with a pull start Mariner 40. The problem is I don't know how to even check the oil level (or where to add more  :) . I also don't know if it's air-cooled or water-cooled. Can someone answer those two questions? :D

Re: Mariner 40

esolabh

The oil is mixed in with the fuel on 2-stroke outboard motors at a 50:1 Mixture, unless of course it's oil injected. It IS water cooled, so Do Not start it unless it is in the water or on water muffs or you will burn up the water pump pronto. A manual will explain all the details. Available at the bottom of this page. If you have serial number, we can give more advice. Should be on the motor mounting bracket.

Thank you. I did start it and run it for about 10 seconds do you think that did any damage? I will check out the serial number tonight when I get home and post it. Are you sure it's a two stroke?

Re: Mariner 40

I will be sure when I get the serial number. If it's also an older motor, odds are it's a 2-stroke. Probably no damage in 10 Seconds.

I believe it's either a 1983 or 1984 Model. No 1971 Model made in 40 HP.

40 ML 6E9-300126 - 6E9-301100 1981
40 ML 6E9-301101 - 1982
40C ML 6E9-304784 - 6E9-306713 1984

Parts by your serial number:

web page

Thanks.

The parts show electric start, mine is a pull start.

Do you still think it is a two cycle motor?

-Brian

Re: Mariner 40

Yes, it is a 2-stroke. If you notice on the Parts Web page that I gave you, it also lists a recoil(pull) starter. It is indeed the correct parts page. They often have electric start on motors this large. They have to list parts for both electric start and manual start.

Re: Mariner 40

Is the motor a two cylinder or four cylinder.

The two cylinder 40's from this era were made in Japan by Yamaha, I believe. These were excellent motors. A friend of mine ran one during this period and it was bullet proof. It was easy to start even with the recoil starter. I ran a Mariner 30 recoil start at the time. It was also a Japanese moter and also great.

I am not sure when Mariner transitioned to Mercury made motors, but one indicator is the number of cylinders. The 4 cylinder Mariner 40 Magnum was made by Mercury. I had one of those for five years and also very reliable. Had some problems early with the power trim and tilt, had one power pack go out, and a stator replaced. But, the motor was ran hard weekly.

Good luck with yours.
