Regulator testing

I have a 100hp Mariner OB 1989. I would like to find out how to test my regulator. The manual I have does not show the same regulator I have. <br />The regulator thats on my motor is about 6 inches long and 3 wide and looks like a big heat sink. Three terminal on it from left to right terminal 1 is marked ALT (yellow stator wire on it) center terminal marked + (two red wires on it one of the wires comes out of the top of the regulator and the other red wire I assume comes/goes to the battery). The Third terminal is marked AUX ALT (yellow stator wire on it). How do I test this regulator? And what do I do with the red regulator wire that comes out of the top of the regulator and conects to terminal 2. Second question the ohm value of my stator is 1.3 ohms the book says must be less than 1 ohm is my stator OK?. And the stator wires have no continuity to ground.

Re: Regulator testing

You are probably in need of a new regulator unit. Actually the unit you have is a combo rectifier/regulator, harder to test than seperate units. Get a full wave rectifier #276-1185 from radio shack for $3.00 and hook your 2 yellow wires to the lugs marked "AC" or "~" hook "-" to ground and + to red lead. Fasten it to some metal for a heat sink and start the motor. Run it about 1200 RPM and check the battery voltage, test meter or dash mount voltmeter. If it is 13v or more your stator should be fine. You could leave it like this as a permanent fix but you will be running w/o a regulator so sustaned RPM's might cook your battery w/ too much voltage. Rapair.com will have a cheaper replacement rec/reg than factory merc. That's what I use and it works fine.
