What is this mysterious box and what are it's inputs and outputs, more specificaly what is the required output from it and is it Ac or Dc, I am getting 180Vac from the stator to the adaptor but not sure of the output values from the "adaptor" to the switchbox? I get 16Vac and 120 Dc output from the adaptor, is this good? Does anyone know, does Mercury even know? Been drudging thru troubleshooting a no spark problem and am stuck at the adaptor, i'll even take guesses, Thanks, Bryce ps I am using a DVA meter

Do you have the Mercury ignition or the prestolite ignition "Blue powerpacks" on the engine?<br /><br />Send me an email...I will have a look tomorrow in the shop manuals.<br /><br />TMD

You probably have a red stator which replaced the original equipment black stators. If so then the stator will have a green/white and a white/green wire coming out that go to the adaptor. The adaptor then has a ground and a blue wire that attaches to the switchbox. If this is the case then you will have a red wire coming from the switchbox that isn't being used.<br /><br />The new CDI stators have gone back to the blue and red wires from the stator and eliminate the adaptor.<br /><br />See this site to help diagnose your problem. <br /><br /> http://www.geocities.com/kenimpzoom/SportJetIgntests.htm <br /><br />I just replaced a red stator on mine and found the best price for CDI stators and switchboxes at Seilermarine.com

I never could figure out what that box does. I do know that is has both AC and DC output on my meter, but that may just be a function of the meter I am using.<br /><br />If you are getting that much from the stator, it should be fine. Most likely your switchbox is bad, but follow all the tests on my web page and it will eliminate all variables.<br /><br />Ken

The box is there to step down the current from the stator. The current comes from the stator at 400 volts. The box..steps down the current to 300 volts. It also eliminates the need for a high and low speed stator.<br /><br />TMD

TMD, you are correct except I get much lower volts.<br /><br />Once you convert to the red stator/red stator adapter you only use the blue wire on the switchbox and leave the red wire unplugged.<br /><br />I never understood why some motors use a two stage stator.<br /><br />Ken

Re: merc 90 sportjet stator adaptor ques

Well I decided to order a Switchbox and will install it when received. If it gives me spark I will do a cranking test on every switchbox wire and post it here. Still not sure about the nominal adaptor output, I do know the stator output will not be as high for cranking as it will be when the engine is running. Thanks for all the help everyone, Bryce
