Merc 75 stalls & what year is it?

My husband kept tryin to use my ski boat for a fishin boat..not to my liking. So I went out and bought him a little boat for his birthday. Yesterday we took it out for the first time. It is a Kiekhaefer Merc 75 Thunderbolt, serial number 2867533. First does anybody know the year? Second, when we went out it starts just fine, go do some puttin and when reduced to an idle stalls. It starts back up after hard work at some pulling. It also seems to start back up better in gear than not....Please help me before the huz divorces me, or worse yet makes me go buy him a real fishin boat..

I need some more details...I cannot find that serial number on my comp.<br /><br />If is says Kiekhafer on it, its old.<br /><br />If you could supply some more details..ie cyl's...carbs ect.<br /><br />TMD

Sry, had to go ask. 7.5 hp, 2 cyl and yes it has a carb..lol. 1 brl made by Tillotson, Toledo, OH. And it is hard to believe this motor is too very old, it all looks brand new even has all the original stickers checked by Quality, not pealing or anything, no wear marks from vibration or anything. The only thing we can see wrong with it is the stop switch is gone.

ah ok...Now its making sense.<br /><br />7.5hp<br /><br />The problem..<br /><br />It is either running on 1 cyl..or starving for gas at idle. The reason it is easier to start when you have it in gear is because you can speed it up.<br /><br />Open the low speed jet 1/8 of a turn.<br /><br />Also..pull the spark plugs and have a look at them. See if one is wet.<br /> <br /><br />TMD

The lower plug was wet.

I have strong spark both plugs, cleaned up the points, thought it corrected the problem, runs good, but still won't idle.

You will now have to remove the carb and clean the low speed ciruit.<br /><br />Or the very least you can do is an adjustment.<--try this first.<br /><br />The setting should be 1 1/2 turns.<br /><br />TMD

Thanx for all your help, we couldn't find the adjustment screw and afraid to take apart the carb. I am going to find a manual and throw it in with the B-Day gift. <br /><br />Or maybe you know of a site that might have the diagram of the carb?

The adjustment screw,should be top right corner of the carb, recessed inside a small 5/16 hole. It is a flathead screw.<br /><br />TMD

Found the screw thanx again, set it at 1.5 turn was 4..wow is better, idles for a little while then dies. What is the best way to clean out the low speed circuit?
