trouble with changing gears

I have a 1962 70 horsepower mercury outboard and I'm having trouble getting it to switch from drive to neutral or reverse. Is there anything that I can do to solve this problem. (Boat probably has not been ran in 10-15 years. Will start)

Is the cable stiff? Is the engine idling too fast?<br /><br />Control box needs to be greased?<br /><br />Some of the old 70's have to be restarted and ran backward for rev<-----thought I might add that for a history lesson.<br /><br />TMD
