I have a 1979 20hp Mercury motor. Serial# is 5334255. Can anyone tell me if that is a short shaft or a long shaft. I am trying to sell it and the buyer is inquiring which it is. I don't know how to tell other than by measuring it I suppose. How would I measure it if the serial number doesn't give the right information?

Serial number will not tell us that.

Measure from the anticavitation plate just above the prop, to where the transom mounts hook over the back of the boat.

15ish = short

20ish = long

TMD
