Re: pump&moter

You're going to have to get a whole lot more specific than that when you start a new thread, please. Fuel pump? Water pump? Trim pump? Oil pump? Air pump? Motor? Year? Horsepower? Brand??? Assuming we're talking about a trim pump, then they're usually attached with #2 phillips head or 10mm hex head screws. Kinda depends where you want to take it apart.

Re: pump&moter

Sorry, I was confused. I looked at the other threads and now I know that we're talking about a 1989 Mariner 175. The swivel pin is held in by a smaller pin by friction. Once it has been removed, it should be replaced with a new one. I use a small chisel on the head and pound it out until I can get a wire cutter to pry it out the rest of the way. Do Not chisel the head off! That would be a bad thing.

The lower tilt cylinder pin is held similarly, but that's not how to remove the assembly. To do that you might have to remove the outboard from the boat and remove the tilt assembly via the bolts holding the trim/tilt manifold to each transom bracket clamp. This is usually doable by loosening the tilt tube nuts to the end of the threads which will give you enough room to swing one clamp bracket out of the way so you can get the trim assembly out. Lotsa work.

It can be done with the motor partially attached to the boat and I can talk you thru it. But one slip and you could crush your hand. Sure you wanna tackle it???

Re: pump&moter

Sorry, I found your original thread and here's some info fer ya. If the trim motor has three wires to it, the black wire is always negative. Putting positive power to the blue wire should trim it up. Positive power to the green wire should trim it down.

If the trim motor only has a blue and a green wire, then negative goes to one, positive to the other. Up and Down will depend on polarity. (Sorry, Hootey. These aren't grounded.)

Before you start taking it apart, you should know that if it is a two wire trim motor, one bad solenoid could cause problems in both directions. If it has three wires, both solenoids would have to be bad for it to fail in both directions.

I suspect (and that's only an educated guess) that water got into the trim motor and rusted things up. You don't have to remove the upper pin to change the trim motor, but you do have to swing the trim/tilt assembly out to get at the bolts on the trim motor. Again, sure you wanna tackle it???
