Fogging the Carb Question

I usually do winterizing by just treating my gas and run it through the outboard as well as the change gear oil, plugs, etc.

I'd like to try fogging the carb this year to see if it makes a difference at all.

I have a 15HP 1995 Merc and the below pict shows the carb with the top off. Do I just spray into the two open areas shown until it smokes?

Thanks!

Re: Fogging the Carb Question

Sorry Mrking

We don't need to fog here in Melbourne Australia, as it never freezes and I can just go out and fire up the motor periodically during the winter.
However.. There are far more qualified people on iboats than I.. Particularly those who live in the cold parts of the US and Canada.
So.. just bump up your post from time to time and do a search on "Fogging" or "Winterising". The principle goes someting like .. Run motor till warm, spray gunk into carbs until motor dies after disconecting fuel line.. But don't quote me on it.

http://continuouswave.com/maintenance-logs/winterize/

Re: Fogging the Carb Question

I doubt you'd get it started with that cover off. Spray it right into the throat of the carb while it's running (best) or pull the sparkplugs and squirt some in there, then put the plugs back in and give the rope a pull with the lanyard switch Off (okay).

Re: Fogging the Carb Question

WillyBWright - Where the TROAT is, is what I am trying to figure out. I thought maybe those were the throats (under the cover) but of course I am incorrect.

Where would I look for the throat of a carb?

Thanks for being patient, the carb area is one place I have never touched and therefore is my sorce of ignorance.

Cheers,

Michael

Wolfman - I read that article and it is what got me started on wanting to fog the carb. The description of where to spray doesn't help me any as I do not know what a THROAT looks like ;)

mrking

The Carb. throat is simply where the air enters the carb. No disassembly nessesary to the carb. to see it. The large opening in the carb where the air gets sucked into to mix with the fuel when running. Very far right SIDE of your picture.
