the tacho has suddenly stoped working at all, & the volt gauge reads 15 volts & more. should the voltage get this high? What componets do i test & what readings. THANKS MATT. :)

Re: mercury 140 blueband voltage

I'd suspect a bad voltage regulator...if yours has one. Most inline 6's just had rectifiers. More information, like serial number or year would help. 115s had blue on black graphics for quite a few years.

Sorry Willy - it's not your day. LOL

The inline six 140hp doesn't HAVE a voltage regulator and never did. It just uses a full wave bridge rectifier. Voltage climb is a common problem with these old motors and the newer batteries. All you can *do* about that is to get the rectifier / regulator combo from a later Merc ( I use one from a 1993 90hp). The other solution is to use up the excess power by leaving your lights on or cranking up the stereo - LOL.

-W

Seems to me I said IF it had a regulator and that most inlines just had rectifiers. Sorry if I caused some confusion. ;)

Re: mercury 140 blueband voltage

You did. And to clear it up, *none* of the inline 6's had a regulator. The last year was 1988 (with some leftovers sold as "1989") Since Mercury goes by serial number as opposed to "model year" calling an '88 leftover an '89 isn't really incorrect.

Now in 1989 some of the "replacement" 3 and 4 cylinder loopers had regulators.

So when someone says he has 1989 115hp inline six. The confusion begins. LOL

-W

Re: mercury 140 blueband voltage

Fair enough, but I've seen aftermarket regulators on outboards. Don't know if they're still available, but they sold them out of snowmobile/minibike catalogs. They weren't factory, but they worked.

But back to the dead tach...if it's charging high, it's charging. The tach signal is there. I'd suspect a bad connection or gauge. Unless it had one of these aftermarket regulators. Then it could charge high and still have no tach signal. (They have a separate blue tach lead.)
