A warm hello to all boaters,
a friend of mine owns a Mariner 115hp 2002 outboard motor which has been checked by a couple of the best marine engine mechanics in the area. It is a four cylinder motor, but only two of the cylinders seem to be working, but not even the mechanics know what is wrong. Can someone help or is more information needed?
Thanks in advance

Re: mariner 115hp mystery

papo42,

Mariner engines are no longer sold in the US. However, Mariners and Mercury's were identical except the paint.

I suspect your 2002 Mariner is a Mercury.

The 115 hp engines only run on two cylinders until they reach 1800 rpm. Is that what is happening with this engine? If so, that's how it is designed to operate.

Re: mariner 115hp mystery

Hi, this engine is running smoothly at idle speed, but when it is revved up, it does not pick up speed. Only two sparkplugs are firing at any given rev. Nobody seems to know what the problem is. Any help will be appreciated.

THANKS

Re: mariner 115hp mystery

Knowing the charactaristics(sp?) of the engine, if there are only two cylinders firing at any RPM, then it must be the top two. Using that as a given, then one of the top two spark modules are probably faulty. Check them according to the service manual and you should locate your problem.

Good Luck!
