Stuck stud prevention

After a two day trial, I just finally pounded a 7" long stud used to hold a shaft extension to the lower unit of my brothers 4hp Mercury Gnat (c. 1980), so I could service it's water pump. I had given up last year and crossed my fingers instead.
Anyway, to my question: what can I do to prevent this stud from sticking in the future? The stud guide is the full 5" long of the cast aluminum extension, the stud itself is stainless. The $%^#$% hard white powdery stuff we all know and hate had it's death grip on it.
So what do you think? Anti-corrosion grease? Never-Sneeze? Wax?
Thanks! I'm off to go try to repair those threads now...

Regular removal is the key... If you service the pump regularly and put some never sieze on it.. it won't have time to corrode.

Re: Stuck stud prevention

Ok, sounds good. I've calmed down a bit from my last post, where I was looking for an absolute guarantee that I wouldn't have to go through that again. :D
The previous owner(s) didn't 'do' maintanance, judging from the teaspoon of thick black goo that came out of the lower unit last year when I drained it. The immediate previous owner offered to cart it off to the dump for my brother, when he sold him his boat.
I should make it clear; it wasn't the threaded portion of the stud that was the problem, but the shank of the stud where it passed through the guide in the extension. Corroded and stuck outboard fasteners I've delt with plenty of times. Never like this though!

Thanks, Merc805!

Re: Stuck stud prevention

Next time you run into a stud stuck with the white powder from corrosion, try spraying some lime away or CLR on it and you will be amazed at how fast the drive just falls off.

OMC Gasket Sealing Compound will keep the threads water tight. No water, no corrosion.

c/6
Hooty

Outboardguy - I tried a knock-off descaler that was laying around years ago and found it didn't work well on those kind of deposits. I'll stop being such a cheap-skate and try the CLR next time. I wonder if you could combine it with a wicking agent, like wallpaper remover? Hmmm...

Hooty - All my 'below the waterline' bolt threads get the sealing compound. That stuff works great for threads. I've pulled screws that were gooped with that 20+ years ago, and they come right out. I don't know if it would work so well along the shank though; this is like a long thru-bolt.

Ok, thanks Ben. I'm off to put the L/U back on then. Good call on putting down the guide too - I never thought of that. I've got just the Q-Tips too...

Re: Stuck stud prevention

Permatex Aviation gasket dressing (#3) does a great job of sealing bolts from salt. I've also used Sta-Lube waterproof marine boat bearing grease (the blue stuff) with equal success.

Any kind of barrier, whether it's sealer, grease, or anti-sieze, helps keep the salt deposits from plugging things up.

The thing I've found with using gasket dressing is, even if things get a bit stuck, just hit them with some heat and they'll bust right loose.

Too bad the factory couldn't spend $.02 on puttting something on the bolts, but then more of their old motors would still be in service, and we can't have that can we!!
