I have a 1958 mercury that is overheating, I would assume its the water pump or impeller. The main problem is a I need a diagram on how to take it apart. Could someone scan one and e-mail it for me? Model # 55E, serial # 1135875. Thanks

That would be illegal, Jay. Copyright laws.

Borrow a manual at your library or just buy one. Best investment you can make.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB, I thought I would give it a shot. My dad is pretty frugal.

You may try some of the online parts sellers most of them have diagrams that are printable. Is what I did when I rebuild my lower unit. I think the site i went to was www.mercruiser.com

Hi Jay,
Being that you've got an older Merc, I STRONGLY suggest you pick up a copy of the 1965-and-Prior Mercury shop manual. You can get a new one from Grubb's (www.oldmercs.com) for around $40.00, or you might find a used one on eBay for less. Either way, it's a good investment if you're planning on running a classic Merc.
Replacing the impeller isn't too difficult, but there are a couple of small hurdles that can drive you nuts if you're not aware of them. You might have to be a little creative with making a tool to remove the pump housing cap, too - think pipe fittings, etc...
- Scott

Re: 45hp merc lower unit diagram

thanks Scott, I already got into it and it was only a grommet I had to replace, the impellar was in fine shape. I would buy a manual if I was keeping the motor (I have one for my johnson and don't know what I would do without it) but I am in the process of trying to sell the mercury. So I would hate to have to buy one for a couple little things. Now I am just having problems getting the shifter back where it was. :) Thanks again.
