Well I have my new fiberglass reeds installed on my black max 150. start up was awsome ,, very smooth I put the boat in my pond for start up and to check things out. Blipping the throttle it really feels a lot quicker .. will have to head to the lake for more detailed performance.

Re: New reeds

Maxi,

Why did you put new reeds into your motor?
My motor (Merc 70HP, 3 cyl, 1982, Thunderbolt ign) has suffered from poor fuel delivery and on saturday during a check with the muffs the engine ran on only two cylinders. Upon checking the top cylinder, the spark plug was dry and no exhaust gas, while the bottom two were OK, a compression check indicated a value of 20psi.
We are planning on removing the inlet manifold to check the reed valves and hopefully view the bores.
Can you provide any advice?

Thanks

mark

Re: New reeds

Mark,
Fiberglass two stage reeds will give you better idle, better hole shot and acceleration, slightly more top end RPM.
If one of your cylinders has been run dry with no oil, it could be the end for that piston and cylinder not to mention the rod and crank bearings. Squirt some TCW-III oil in the spark plug hole and replace the plug and try cranking and feel for reverse puff on the dry cylinder carb. If you have the reverse puff, the reed on that cylinder is gone. Also check the fuel line and the carb to see if its getting fuel. If not, then I would dissassemble the carb and look for clogs. When was the last time you replaced the fuel pump diaphrams? Some models of Mercs have inline fuel filters and fuel screens on the motor, check them too. There is also a batch of older Mercury fuel lines with squeeze bulb that had an issue with the check valves in them too. A bore scope inspection is due if that cylinder has been run dry for any period of time. Personally I would not run the engine unless I tore it down for inspection and possible replacement of piston, rings, wrist pin bearings, crank bearings. Hopefully the crank is NOT damaged. The cylinder may need to be bored or honed to another size.

Re: New reeds

Cheers Flyboy,

Update:
Well decided to remove the inlet manifold to see what damage had been done :( . Top bore was scored so the crankshaft was removed, a number of the piston rings had disintegrated   and some minor bits were found in the cylinder head.
New parts on order pistons incl rings, re-bore and full gasket set £400 or $700, plus the price of fuel going to around $6.80 boating is going to be fun
