Recently was checking my engine and found two PVC hoses that needed to be replaced. One is connected the reservoir under the cowl that holds the oil. The other comes off a T connector that brings fuel from the primer bulb. After the replacement I get beeps when the engine is up and running. I was afraid to run the engine longer that 10 secs while the beeps are sounding. Is the because the hoses were replaced the oil needs to circulate or are there air in my system that needs to be purged? If it needs to be purged can someone give me pointers. Thanks in Advance!

You need a shop manual ... there's a phillips bleed screw on the oil pump to bleed air from the oil lines, at least there is on my '95 150 HP. Open the screw a little until air stops coming out (only oil), then close it. I would add oil to the gas until you're sure the oil pump is pumping (and the alarm stops).

If I had to guess, I would say you do not have enough oil in the oil reservior under the cowl, you have to purge it also. fill with oil to the point of being able to install the cap and sensor without a mess, and then start your engine on muffs in the driveway, and loosen the cap a bit while running. When oil starts to leak out of the cap, tighten the cap down. Follow the wildones advice too and you should be good to go.

The only shop manual to get is the Merc OEM one. You can order from Mercury Parts Express online. The third party manuals are way inferior to the OEM one.

Part number for the Merc manual is 90-814098-1. Be sure it's 1989 though, if it's 1988 then it's a different manual. If the serial number is 0C100861 or higher then it's 1989.

Chris...........

I followed the instructions on loosen the bleed screw and placing oil in the gas to bleed air from the oil line. The oil low warning has stopped but I got an additional question. The clear hose from the reservoir to the pump is full of oil. The clear hose from the pump to the t-connector on the fuel line is not full of oil will the hose fill when I run the boat on the water?

This is not a good sign. Remove the line from the fuel line and start the engine and see if the oil fills the line, then recconect it. If no oil, then your pump is faulty.

I think the hose that is not filled with oil is my oil pump outlet hose. I got a 90 Seloc manual that it mentions on V6 engines to remove the link rod arm from the oil pump level then rotate the pump arm fully clockwise while idling at 1000-1500 rpms to purge the outlet hose. Not sure if its the same procedure for a 89 engine?

Check to see if the oil pump driven shaft rotates when you turn the flywheel by hand. If it doesn't move at all, the oil pump is not turning either. I would put oil in the gas until you're sure what's going on.

If the oil pump is not turning, put the coupler and driven shaft ... if you find black plastic debris on the driven shaft, the helical gear on the crankshaft has failed. You will then have three choices: 1) replace the gear (very expensive) 2) run premix, or 3) install an aftermarket electronic oiling system

Note that the oil pump itself is a very unlikely failure candidate.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Wildeone, Good Post, I guess I was a little vague. Its true that the pump doesnt fail often.

Somehow I had the impresion that he had already put some oil in the gas, Maybe not. You need to, or run it on another tank with 50:1 while testing.

When you replace the lower oil line it's normal for it not to fill all the way up right away. If you look closely you will see the oil moving down the hose. The first time you run the mtor for any length of time the tube will fill right back up.

Yep I placed oil in the gas while I tried to work out my problems. Took it to the lake yesterday after bleeding the lines and everything looks ok now. What are the downfalls of putting oil in the gas as a safety measure? Also is there a easy way to tell if the the oil is now mixing with the gas?

There really isn't a down side if you don't mind it smoking like heck and fouling plugs out on a regular basis.

Put a mark (felt marker) on your oil tank and see if it drops after running it for a while. Dont expect it to drop very much, and make sure you check it while the boat is parked in the same place both times.

Check to see the oil pump discharge line (the one going to the mixing tee) has oil in it and the horn is silent (and working).
