leg oil smelled burnt

I have a mid 80's long shaft 4.5 hp kicker. I just got it and replaced the leg oil. When I drained it the oil had a burnt smell and had a big swirl of wellowish color.

The motor has been sitting for 5 or 6 years and I also noticed that the plugs don't seal properly because the leg is dripping from the drain plug to the ground.
How bad is this problem?
Will new o-rings on the plugs make it seal properly?
Can I use High Performance synthetic gear oil? (I have a few extra quarts for my 70 hp).

Thanks,
Grant

Because the oil was so degraded, I would do a flush with just regular lower unit oil, then drain overnight and replace with your synthetic oil and install new gaskets and you should be good to go. check periodicly over the use this summer for water though to make sure your sealed up.

I am willing to bet that there is no water in the oil. A very small amount will turn the thing creamy, no swirled. Burnt smell=way too long between changes. Replace the gaskets on the plugs and drain and re check after a couple trips. I bet you are fine

I flushed it out with fresh gear oil, put new o-rings on the plugs and re-filled it. I'll run it this weekend, drain it and see what comes out.

Thanks,
Grant
