Re: Soup-up 9.9 merc
Boyesen as it is correctly spelled, will generaly give you 100-200 rpm @ WOT on smaller outboards and 200 RPM or more on larger outboards. In addition throttle response will be much quicker(better hole shots) and idle smoothness should be much better. The only important thing to remember is NOT to let the engine backfire during warm up. This will damage the reeds over a period of time.<br /> As far as souping up an engine, you are permitted as the owner to do what ever you want as long as the FUEL AIR MIXTURE RATIO MEETS THE EPA STANDARDS ON THE EXHAUST SIDE. On plain-jane 2 cycle outboards, this means to simply make the engine run properly at standard tune up spec(no slobbering rich idle and properly tuned high speed jets....)Driving a car down the street with a smoking engine or thick black fuel rich exhaust has been illegal for many years before EPA regs just about everywhere and it should'nt be any different for and outboard. RACING is a very subjective term for outboards.....In this direction, presently, no special wavers have to be applied for YET! So by simply claiming its a racing engine, bypasses this subjective EPA regulation. There are some states such as California that have some very strange laws that may circumvent any outboard performance work as they do on cars without adding special smog eguipment. The EPA regs are specifically targeting the repair shops and dealers, not the end users ,YET!
