Thanks in advance for any help, I have tried looking at other posts about upgrades and tried putting it all together in my head. But that hasn't been working for me. my question is:

Other than upgrading the carb to a 15hp carb(already have). What else can i do to get more out of my 9.9hp Mecury 2004 model #:1010201CD.

Re: Soup-up 9.9 merc

Aside from changing prop pitch/size, little can be done to modify modern outboards without spending more than it would cost to upgrade to a larger motor. Alterations to any outboard made after 1998 is actually illegal.

If you want 20 hp - go buy a 20 hp! The boys at Merc have done the numbers. Don't you think if they could get much more, and retain reliability, they'd do it?

achris60 we have lots of lakes here that are 10 hp only so some guys change the carb to a 15 hp one to get more power ---seth we used to put model airplane fuel in our 2 stroke dirt bikes to make them go faster just don't tell anyone that i raced thats what i did to beat them i don't see why that wouldn't work in a boat motor

Seth:

I had a 15 Evinrude that was not going too fast. I replaced the prop with a larger one and it really made a difference. I have no idea why the smaller one was on it in the first place. But the change made a noticeable difference.

Bill

Re: Soup-up 9.9 merc

Boyesen as it is correctly spelled, will generaly give you 100-200 rpm @ WOT on smaller outboards and 200 RPM or more on larger outboards. In addition throttle response will be much quicker(better hole shots) and idle smoothness should be much better. The only important thing to remember is NOT to let the engine backfire during warm up. This will damage the reeds over a period of time.
As far as souping up an engine, you are permitted as the owner to do what ever you want as long as the FUEL AIR MIXTURE RATIO MEETS THE EPA STANDARDS ON THE EXHAUST SIDE. On plain-jane 2 cycle outboards, this means to simply make the engine run properly at standard tune up spec(no slobbering rich idle and properly tuned high speed jets....)Driving a car down the street with a smoking engine or thick black fuel rich exhaust has been illegal for many years before EPA regs just about everywhere and it should'nt be any different for and outboard. RACING is a very subjective term for outboards.....In this direction, presently, no special wavers have to be applied for YET! So by simply claiming its a racing engine, bypasses this subjective EPA regulation. There are some states such as California that have some very strange laws that may circumvent any outboard performance work as they do on cars without adding special smog eguipment. The EPA regs are specifically targeting the repair shops and dealers, not the end users ,YET!

Bore out that intake. If it is smaller than that oversized carb you need to open it up and match them.

Pull down the powerhead and have port work done. You may find a motorcycle porting tech, or someone from the advertisers at screamandfly.com that could do some porting on it for you.

Open up, or perhaps shorten the exhaust tuner in the leg area if so equipped. Then you will also want to open up the leg to help get the exhaust out above the water. Louder=better=faster, maybe , maybe not.

Re: Soup-up 9.9 merc

WARNING to people on 10Hp lakes. Law Enforcement loves people that cheat on Hp. It's painfully obvious! Got a rowboat with 2 people and a dog that's on plane? It's blatently apparent that it's NOT a 9.9 anymore!

And yes, it takes more than a carb to get 15Hp out of a 9.9. Exhaust tuning, timing curve, etc.

Very frequent question, always seems to involve 9.9s and 10 Hp lakes. Do a search and you'll get volumes of information and plenty of opinions.
