Purchased manual to sync & Link my 2000 Merc 75 Outboard and have check all past post but did not find an answer .......when adjusting timing, and looking at timing mark, here is my dumb question #1 The numbers (degrees) to the left and right of TDC which is BTDC just wanted to make sure

#2 To adjust the Oil Pump the manual states: "on some model powerheads the oil pump may have two markings on the body of the pump. The second mark should be disregarded for the alignment and adjustment procedures"..... which one is the second mark. The left or right mark as you look at the pump?

thanks

Re: 2000 Merc 75 sync & link Question about BTDC,ATDC

nd2fsh, I cannot assist with your pump question, but BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) occurs before TDC, as the motor is running. That is as the motor turns while cranking or running, BTDC degrees show at the timing mark (or pointer) before the TDC mark.

My merc spins Clockwise (viewed from above). This makes BTDC on the left side of the TDC mark.

Gee, isn't obvious? The mark that you're Not supposed to align with is the Second mark. ;) (Gotta love those aftermarket manuals.)

See which way the arm swings as you open the throttle and align it with the mark it would hit second. That'd be the richer of the two and you'd be safe. At least that's what I'd do. I'm afraid I don't know which would be which. I'd assume that the first mark would be the first mark as you advance the lever, but assumptions like that can toast a motor. Err on the safe side. Hopefully somebody actually knows the answer and will chine in. I'm probably wrong, but it's Safe advice. Sparkplugs are cheap, overhauls aren't.

Re: 2000 Merc 75 sync & link Question about BTDC,ATDC

Thanks for the help..figured out the BTDC got everything done except the oil pump was having problems with motor loosing rpm from midway on up...did the seafoam..sync and link Etc....I must say it was easier than i thought but have to admit the seloc manuals are not that precise on diagrams and what not....had to read the section many times to get the full understanding. of course the section for 75 & 90 hp had no diagrams

thanks for all you experts out there i must have spent 4-5 hours going over post after post trying to figure this thing out I did test drive tonight and everything runs great i just had to adjust the idle because of the differacne between muffs and running in the water under full load....

Thanks again Steve
