6000 sounds too high 5000 to 5500 should be the range your motor should run at. It might be the prop or something else. How long have you had the boat? Has it always been like this or is this someting new? What prop(dia and pitch) is on it now?

the prop on the motor now is 10" diameter. pitch is 14.....i just rebuilt the power head, motor runs really good.the problem with the slow to plane is not new,i have always had this problem. i have had the boat for 3 years.

As I recall, that motor was derated from 40 HP(head rated) and it was one of the first "loopers" mercury made. I believe you need a 13" or maybe even a 12" pitch prop for your rig. What does you rig weigh with you in it? This would help too.. Find a Mercury "prop demo dealer" and they'll rent you a prop to try out.....In addition, check your cables for complete travel and make sure the carbs are opening up all the way and spark advance is working properly
