crankcase cover bleed restrictors (2.4L V6)

I have a question about the little plastic bleed restrictors that are pressed into the 1/8" holes on the top (front) of the crankcase cover.

I am putting my 175 black max back together, and noticed that there are 5 bleed holes drilled in the cover. They are drilled at all different angles, some are straight down into the crankcase area, while others are at an angle and lead to the top and bottom bearings.

There was only one hole with the plastic resrictor installed. The manual said there should be one in all holes except for the one that leads to the bottom cylinder.

I drove the resrictor out so I could show it to a mechanic and get some more. He acted like he didn't know anything about them. So I came home and looked it up on one of the websites with diagrams. Well, it turns out they are part number 66517, but the diagram says only one or two are required, depending on the serial number. But the part is only shown on the parts list, not on the picture itself. Now to make matters worse, I can't remember just which hole the resrictor came out of.

Any ideas which holes get these restrictors, and which if any don't?

Thanks!
Rich

Re: crankcase cover bleed restrictors (2.4L V6)

Bump...

I am still wondering about these little bleed restrictors. I have learned a little bit about them, pretty much just enough to have me really confused. My serial number is OB349499. When I bring up a link showing a parts diagram for my motor, it shows a picture of a crankcase cover for a horizontal reed block. My motor has a vertical reed block, and came like that from the factory. It does not show the bleed restrictors on the picture, but it does have them on the parts list, and says 2 are required. But I can't really go by that because its the wrong crankcase cover. WHen I bring up diagrams for other 2.4L motors with vertical reeds, some serial numbers say 1 is required, and others (with the identical picture) say 2 is required. So I am at a loss.

Any ideas? I am finished building the short block and am ready to install the reed block, but need to figure this out before I can go any further.

Thanks in advance!
Rich
