I have a 1999 Mercury Optimax outboard engine. The engine warning light comes on. does anybody know how to diagnose or trouble shoot the warning light with out a DDT. There is not one available with in 200 miles. Does anybody have any ideas?

What light is lit? Is there a horn sounding and if there is what type of tone? Beep beep or Beeeeeeeeep? If you know those factors figuring out the problem shouldn't be to hard!

it is damn near impossible to diagnose a opti with out a ddt... you could have anything from coil pack failure to direct inj. failures.... make the drive to a dealer.. & plug it in.. alot cheaper than guessing & buying parts when dirrect Inj are $300.00 a pop

Please tell us how. I know you can test each and every sensor with an ohmmeter. There aren't all that many. You can check injectors that way too. Is that how you did it, opti150? How long have you had yours and would you buy another one?

One of the best ways to trouble shoot is to come to forums like this one and ask questions. It was at this forum that i found my answer. I talked with two mechanics that had a ddt that would download the error codes for my opti. They both said that a ddt would tell of a error code but that it may be something else that caused the code to begin with. My check engine light was the idle set screw was not fully against the stop.Adjusted the cable and problem solved. After checking all injectors/coils and sensors that checked out ok, it was at this forum that a guy mentioned to check the cables. <br /><br />Yes, i also checked injectors and coils and other sensors with a ohm/volt meter. The service manual tells you how to do this and what the readings should be. <br /><br />Would i buy another opti? Yes!

Just checked my old post about my opti. It is you, WillyBWright, that i need to thank, for the tip about the cable adjustment. Just got back from a 11 day fishing trip and the opti ran great with no engine light. Thanks again!! Larry
