We have a mid-60's Mercury 3.9 that we got from my girlfriend's grandfather.
The serial number is #2078115
I recently put in a new plug and fresh gas and oil after it had been sitting unused for about 4 years. Started up fairly easy and ran fine. Took it out on the back of our 12 foot boat and pushed it ok for the engine size.
When we stopped for a bit and restarted the motor, the motor started but had no drive to the prop. Pulled the prop and did not find a pin or anything broken. Since that time I have pulled the cover and when you move the gear selector between Forward and Reverse the lever moves in turn moving the cams.
My question is: Is this a serious problem or something that can be repaired easily??
Most shops in my area won't touch anything over 20 tears old.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Mercury 3.9 not spinning prop

The question is.......

Is the nut on the end of the propeller shaft turning while it's not going anwhere?

If it is the shear pin may have fallen to pieces and you missed it, the hub has failed in the prop,

or it means further inspection is warranted like removing the entire lower unit and examineing the splines,

or turn shaft(s) and check the gears.
