replaced water pump and have been unsuccessful in attempts at putting lower unit on.when i get it reattached the shift shaft aligns in the wrong gear. when i got motor, top shift rods were not connected.i have both the seloc and the merc service manuals but am unable to find any info on how to align shift shaft properly.i can get the shaft engaged but it does not match spring in top of shift rod.

Re: 65 merc 350 shift shaft alignment problems

Hi Rut13,
I find it easiest to align both top and bottom shift rods in the neutral position. In neutral, the prop will spin freely in either direction. Set the upper shift linkage to the neutral position as well and reassemble...
- Scott
