Ok guys. Let me introduce myself.

My name is Rob Dennis. Im a electrician. ive been working on jet skis as a part time job for abotu 9 years. Recently I sold my skis and went looking for a boat.
My ( read wife) requirements are

the boat to fin in garage ( narrowed it down to a 17-19 foot depending on the trailer ( detachable tongue)

Inboard out board. i prefer a v8 she doesnt care.

So far we are planning on a used boat late 80s early 90s. Dont plan on spending more than 5000$ less is preferable but thats our cap and with that it has to have everyting.
What shoudl I look for hours, etc. jet skis I can figure out easy but boats I dont know.
Im looking at bayliners since they seem to be a lot of them ( or is it liek sea doo? a crap load of them all with problems?) What shoudl I stay away from.
Any info given is very much appreciated and if you guys have jet ski questions feel free to PM me or post them

Thanx
Rob

Welcome to iboats.Your $5000 cap would be better spent on something other than a Bayliner. The resale on those really stink and the boat is a subpar vessel. They are kind of the Polaris or the Tiger shark of the pwc,s Charlie

Think about the inboard/outboard issue carefully. Inboards are heavy and have far more systems to worry about and are expensive to repair. Inboards also have far less room than the same length outboard. You can swap manufacturers of outboards in an hour but you are very limited if you want to repower an inboard. I've been both ways and prefer the outboard by far.

Outboard boats are typically easier to work on.

I think that you'll get problems with any kind of boat you get if the guy before you didn't take care of it. If you find a Bayliner in perfect shape in your price range, than go for it. You should know enough about engines to be able just to see it run in the water and know if there are any problems but if you doubt yourself, hire somebody to look it over. A test in the water is a must. If the owner refuses, then you don't want the boat. I would say go with an outboard as they are easier to learn with because they're more manauverable and are easier to work on.

Rob - Before you get to tied up with brand and powerplant think carefully about what kind of boating you want to do and what type of boat fills that need. You might even drop by a local marina or boat ramp and chat with folks who have what appeals to you.

I agree with the guys above re the Bayliners and I/Os and yes I had one. I would not consider either. Best bet is a quality boat with a well maintained OMC outboard in my view.

Good advice on the boat...I'll tackle the garage. My garage is only 20' deep, however, I have 24' at an angle from the front corner to the opposite back corner. My boat is 21'7" from bow to swim platform, and I get it in the garage.

If you figure on putting the outdrive into the back corner and can find a trailer with the folding/detachable tongue, then you can easily get a 19' boat in there. Just lay it out and measure, it worked for me.

Just note that a single axle trailer will allow you to spin the front end around and tuck her in the corner. However, my dbl axle won't turn that easy cause the wheels don't counter spin.

Re: Getting boat dont know whats good

Well the boat is mostly gonna be used for playing around. Basically me and my wife are gonna take it out and have lunch on it go on the lake, try skiing, light fishing. main reason for the boat is so my wife and I spend some time together. When i had the jet skis she didnt want to go in the ocean and at the river it was too hot and when she did go she stayed on shore. She didnt care much for them she only suffered through it because she knew I enjoyed them. but she said she is more willing to go on a boat.
My garage is 22 foot 9 inch deep. I measured a couple of boats and a 19 foot with a detachable tongue trailer will fit in there.
So far i looked at one Bayliner, one Sunbird and a Maxum. Next Im looking at a sea ray and sea swirl. Im not in a hurry to buy one, Which seems to be a good thing. Im not rushing into a purchase. I know jet skis cost $$ to fix so I cant imagine boats being cheaper.
Any other advice is appreciated
Thanx
Rob

Be very, very careful about structural rot on a boat in your age/price range. It is a HUGE problem, and extremely costly and difficult to repair, and also difficult to identify. Many of the current owners who are selling don't even realize they have a problem brewing, so even an honest seller may have no idea. Almost all fiberglass boats of that age have wood structure, and the wood is often rotted.

Brand name on the boat itself is meaningless, in my opinion. Bayliners are plentiful and cheap, so you'll probably find many. And they wouldn't scare me off as much as some others here. Much more important than brand is CONDITION. One exception to my "brand name unimportant" theory is in the drivetrain...I'd stay away from OMC sterndrives because they're no longer in business and parts/service can be difficult. They will, however, be cheap for that very reason, so I'd expect you may look at some as they'll be in your price range. All the same, think Mercruiser or Volvo for easier and cheaper service and maintenance.

In the sub-$5000 price range you're going to be looking at boats that likely have some issues with Bellows, Gimbal bearings and housings, engine driveshaft alignment, shift cables, leaking seals, the list goes on. Do you know how to check these things on a prospective boat? And again, do you know how to check for rotted stringers and engine mounts that are encased in solid fiberglass so you can't see the wood?

If no, then my best advice to you is to pay someone very knowledgeable to check out any boat you are seriously considering purchasing...an independant boat mechanic, or a boat surveyor, or the like. There's a lot of $5,000 boats out there that need $5,000 in repairs, and they look really clean to the average person. The $100 to $200 to pay someone to check it out is the best investment you could ever make. ESPECIALLY if you don't buy the boat based on problems they found, believe it or not! Good luck in your search!

I agree that you should take your time, but you are also entering a good time of year to buy a boat. In six months boats will be selling for more and there will be fewer to choose from as spring fever hits. Still take your time.

Re: Getting boat dont know whats good

I couldnt tell you how much i thank you guys for the advice. I was gonna have the boat looked at by a marine shop before I bought it. I called around and the average price to have a boat looked at is about 150$

Rob
