hello, i have a 1980 mercury 40hp, the 2 cylinder itty bitty one.both of the starter mounts broke off and somebody(chinewalker) had suggested replacing the part of the block that has the mounts on it.

if i DO replace this front half of the block thingy, would i have to re-adjust anything once i open up the motor, i dont really like going "inside" if you know what i mean, id just as well stay outa there if i could help it...

i have included a pic of the parts-blow up from mercurys website. i want to know if somebody knows what exactly this deal is called and where in tarnation to start looking for one, as mercury says they are NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

i dont mind having it welded, but the guru's had already stated that if i weld it, it will break again.

here is that pic

Crankcase cover. And it's 'matched' to the crankcase and can't be purchased seperately.

You're right there Mike. They have the same part number for the 40 and the 35.

Hi Mike,
As I mentioned before, Mercury doesn't recommend replacing just that part as it is machine matched, BUT I've found that you can get around that in most cases IF you remove the alignment dowels and allow the main bearings to align the halves. Care should also be taken to assure that the parts are aligned vertically as well, checked by running your fingernail along the lower edge of the block/crankcase cover seam where it will meet the exhaust housing. Racers have been mixing and matching parts for years on the old 4-cylinders and they work fine... Check your local outboard graveyards - bound to be some old '75-'86 40/35hp models in the junque piles....
- Scott
