Here's the problem. 97' Mariner 150 won't tilt, trim, or hold position. When I manually tilt motor full stroke, I can hear fluid squirting or bypassing internallly, though it seems like far too much to simply be a bad o-ring. I have a factory manual. Here's what I've checked. 1. trim motor both relays operate.
2. Disassambled port trim cylinder replaced o-rings, inspected check valves in piston for FOD (none)& blew out checks with compressed air. 3. Removed & disassembled pump everything seems pristine inside, no excessive wear. 4. Replaced manual byass valve & o-rings.
I have not done anything with the main tilt ram.
Questions:
1. Can the pump look so good and yet be bad, the check ball seats looked perfect?
2. Are there any tricks to getting the system bled of air? Airlocked.
3. This is beyond the manual, but what should the side clearances be for the pump gears?
I'm a capable DIY'er.
4. Short of blindly replacing the pump, what else can I check?

rodbolt, outboard Doc, DHPMARINE, or any other knowledgable soul
This seems right up your alley please HELP

Many thanks in advance
Waddell

does the electric motor operate when the trim switch is depressed? when you tilt it usuing the manual release valve and then close the valve does it leak back down ?

I can't locate the service bulletin right now,but there is one about the manual release valve. It breaks off in the valve housing.Maybe pull the new one out,and compare it with the original.

DHP

rodbolt,
yes, motor operates both directions. when I said I could tilt it manually, that is with the new manual release valve installed and CLOSED. It bleeds down in about 5 seconds.
Thats the baffling part.

DHP,
the new valve is identical to the old.

More Info,
originally I said I could hear fluid squirting. I've located, using a stethoscope, the squirting noise to be coming from inside the main tilt ram. I would deduce this to mean that the check valve in the tilt ram piston is stuck open or that the piston o-ring is a goner. whadya think?

could be. also carefully inspect the tiny hex key that connects the motor to the pump. they were prone to stripping. if the drive hex is good it may be time to tear down the tilt ram. however I would carefully inspect the manual release assy first.
good luck and keep posting

Re: rodbolt, outboard Doc, DHPMARINE, "tilt/trim savy" tech help?

I have a pair of '95 150's and the stbd one leaks down from the tilt position, but holds trim fine. A knowledgeable tech told me the cause of that is the check valve in the ram. He said it has very small clearances and is very susceptible to the smallest piece of foreign matter. Once it gets crap in it, it's unlikely to self clear. Maybe high pressure air to blow it out? Anyone else try this?
